About Mikael Darni

Artist Statement:
As a second generation reverse painted glass artist the paint brush is my favorite tool as it carves out color layer after layer of paint providing me with my precise plan for each piece. Planning the layers of paint I apply to the glass, I am enabled to carve out my artist vision. This is completely in reverse of “classical” paint application.
Most recently, I used a recycled handmade Patron bottle and transformed it into a fluid design that twisted a Square bottle. This created a reverse hand painted abstract/floral pendant lamp. Cutting out the bottom of the bottle inspired me to use the entire vessel which produced a painted personal Valet Tray that reflects the pendant lamp light. I continue to be inspired daily by the beauty of nature around me, my goal is to expand my vision with larger public installation!
BIO:
Mikael is senior artist and paint department manager for Ulla Darni’s studio in the Catskill Mountains in New York and has been a key factor in the rise in popularity of Darni’s Multiple Original patterns and Mikael Darni Original's. Mikael attended the School of Visual Arts, New York City. His years of work in the advertising art profession include projects for French automakers Renault/Citroën, carpet manufacturers Karastan and Bigelow, Heineken Brewery and Webster’s Publishing. He has painted alongside Ulla Darni since 1996 where his passion for glass painting began. Reverse painting is painting on the inside of a glass surface. The chandelier, lamp, sconce or lantern is then lighted and viewed through its lightly frosted exterior. This technique adds depth and three dimensionality to the artwork.
